World-famous composer of marches and other band music.  Directed the Barnum & Bailey Circus Band and the Ford Dodge (Iowa) Municipal Band.  Many musicians consider his circus marches to be the very best ever written.  Early pioneer of the American band movement.  Was one of the best-liked bandmasters of his generation.  Know as a baritone virtuoso in his early years.  Nationally famous guest conductor.  A major bridge in Iowa in named in his honor.  Past President of the American Bandmasters Association.
